Your HOA is usually the first call
North Potomac is mostly a collection of planned subdivisions, and most of them were built after the early 1980s. Many have a homeowners association with an architectural review committee, and some associations want to review any exterior project before work starts.

Where the line is
North Potomac has no town government. Its streets belong to the county, and a dumpster on a county street needs a county dumpster permit and warning devices, which we do not supply. Our permit guide walks through it. Almost nobody here needs it, because almost every house has a driveway.
Two neighbors do things differently. Across Darnestown Road (MD 28), the City of Gaithersburg issues its own permits. To the east, so does the City of Rockville. If your mailing address says Gaithersburg or Rockville, check whether you are actually inside city limits. Most North Potomac addresses are not.
The drive from our yard is about 25 minutes, across on Veirs Mill Road and out Darnestown Road, so ordering the day before is the safest bet. Same-day delivery is still possible when you call before noon.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in North Potomac?
Not from the county, as long as it sits on your driveway or other private property. Your HOA may have its own approval process, so check with them first.
