Takoma Park runs its own streets
Takoma Park is an incorporated city, so its streets belong to the city, and the dumpster permit comes from the city, not from Montgomery County. The rule is simple:
- In your driveway: no permit needed.
- On a city street or other city right-of-way: you need the city's Dumpster and Storage Container Permit. Apply on the city's MyTKPK online portal, pay the invoice, and allow 5 to 7 business days. Do not have the container placed until the city tells you the permit is issued.

Five state highways run through the city: Carroll Avenue (MD 195), University Boulevard (MD 193), New Hampshire Avenue (MD 650), Piney Branch Road (MD 320), and Philadelphia and Ethan Avenues (MD 410). A dumpster on one of those is a state matter, and in practice a side street or a driveway is always the better spot.

Old houses, hilly streets, big trees
Takoma Park has the largest historic district in the county. The oldest houses are Queen Anne and Shingle style homes from the late 1800s. After them came streetcar-era bungalows, Four Squares, and a remarkable number of Sears catalog houses. Whole blocks of bungalows line Willow, Park, Philadelphia, and Westmoreland Avenues.
For a dumpster, that means three things:

- Streets are narrow and hilly. Driveways on the older lots can be short, steep, or shared. Send us a photo of the spot and we will tell you what fits. When the street really is the only option, that is exactly when the city permit applies.
- Trees are everywhere. The truck tilts the container to roll it off, so it needs clear air above the drop spot. Low limbs over a driveway are the most common problem we see here.
A house in the historic district needs county review for exterior changes to the building itself. We found no rule that treats a temporary dumpster as one of those changes, but your contractor's permit for the work may have its own conditions.

What city trash pickup will not take
The city collects household trash every week, and it books bulk pickups for furniture and appliances ($15 for up to three items). It does not take construction or demolition debris: no wood, drywall, roof shingles, or other remnants of a renovation. That is the gap a dumpster fills.
